What better time to celebrate the importance of healthy families. Unfortunately, children in Shasta County are at greater risk for child abuse than almost anywhere else in the state. One in every four children will be reported for suspected abuse or neglect by their fifth birthday; nearly twice the state average. A report recently published by the Perryman Group, building on a report from the CDC, estimates that each first time occurrence of child maltreatment costs the U.S. economy about $1.8 million in total expenditures, $800,000 in gross domestic product and $500,000 in personal income over a lifetime.   For the 506 children who experienced child abuse and neglect in Shasta county in 2014 that equates to more than $1.5 billion dollars…for just one year.  These dollars do not measure the trauma our children experience and the negative impact on the quality of their life into the future.  Focusing on prevention must be a priority for all of us.

Join us all month long as we promote productive and positive ways to help prevent child abuse in Shasta County!
